Common Materials Used in Cosmetic Packaging

ABS is an engineering plastic that is not environmentally friendly and has relatively high hardness, so it should not come into direct contact with cosmetics or food. In acrylic cosmetic packaging, it is typically used for inner lids and shoulder sleeves. Its color tends to be yellowish or off‑white...

Cosmetic packaging is evolving: simplicity, eco-friendliness, and high quality are becoming the trend.

Through attending exhibitions and conducting interviews, a reporter from “Cosmetics Finance Online” found that cosmetic packaging manufacturers—whether producing glass or plastic containers—are all striving for superior transparency in their products. Barron (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., based in Italy and specializing in glass packaging, has seen its sales director, Tong Yidong, tell reporters that customer expectations for the quality of glass packaging are steadily rising. “Glass packaging is gradually shifting toward the mid- to high-end segments, and in the ongoing balance between product quality and price, transparency remains a key criterion,” he explained. Tong Yidong offered an example: When Mary Kay was considering partnering with Barron, they noticed that one of Barron’s nail polish bottles looked almost identical to their own—but Mary Kay’s bottle had a noticeable yellowish tint, with far less clarity than Barron’s. Once various nail polish colors were filled into the bottles, the final appearance suffered significantly; bottles with lower transparency produced duller results. “Packaging that may appear similar on the surface often differs markedly in quality,” he noted. However, Tong Yidong also pointed out that most skincare packaging currently available in China is made of plastic, with glass bottles representing only a niche market. “It’s important to emphasize that the domestic market is still evolving, and the prospects for glass packaging will continue to expand. Our task is to clearly identify our target customer base and strive to capture as much market share as possible.” In addition, “thick-bottomed” bottles have become another major trend in the cosmetics industry. “Thick-bottomed bottles are of higher quality, demand more advanced manufacturing techniques, and look more premium,” said Li Feng, a designer at Aida International Trading Co., Ltd. Typically, thick-bottomed bottles are produced using injection molding, whereas thinner‑bottomed ones are made via blow molding—a process that places higher technical demands. According to information obtained from Aida International, PETG material is increasingly replacing traditional PP and PET in cosmetic plastic packaging. “PETG is essentially an upgraded version of PET—it offers better corrosion resistance, higher light transmittance, improved drop resistance, and is usually manufactured through injection molding, resulting in superior overall quality.” Paper packaging innovations keep emerging, further embedding eco‑friendly principles in consumers’ minds. “The paper packaging market is currently stable, though customer needs vary considerably,” said a representative. To meet these diverse demands, additional post‑processing steps are applied to paper packaging. These handcrafted touches add value, making products more distinctive and enhancing their competitiveness. Customers primarily come from overseas markets such as the Middle East, the United States, and Europe. “Middle Eastern clients seek ultra‑luxurious packaging, American customers prefer simplicity and cost‑effectiveness, while European buyers favor understated elegance,” the representative explained. Depending on specific client preferences, meticulous attention is paid to post‑production finishing processes—such as setting diamonds on boxes, inserting velvet linings, applying pearl accents, incorporating localized pearlescent films, creating tactile textures, or achieving three‑dimensional visual effects. “Compared with domestic companies, foreign firms place greater emphasis on packaging—using it to showcase products and elevate brand image,” said Yu Liangjie, Asia Sales Manager at Mohawk Fine Papers in the U.S. He added that since 2014, Chinese enterprises have also been paying increasing attention to packaging, particularly environmental sustainability. “Therefore, we believe that China’s paper packaging sector will move ever higher upmarket, with environmentally friendly materials gaining growing popularity and recognition.”

Requirements and Standards for Cosmetic Packaging Materials and Relevant National Regulations

In fact, all materials used in cosmetic packaging should be non-toxic and safe. Below, we will explain this from six different aspects. 1. Bottles (including plastic and glass bottles) 1.1 The bottle body should be intact, stable, straight, smooth, and of roughly uniform thickness. It must be free of cold cracks, fissures, obvious scars, and deformations. 1.2 The bottle mouth should be straight and free of burrs. Any mating components (such as threads) must be in good condition and properly aligned...

Examining Product Appearance Design and Consumer Psychology Through Cosmetic Packaging

Against the backdrop of rapid economic development, young consumers’ spending attitudes have evolved in tandem with rising living standards. Skincare products are both essential daily necessities and items that enhance one’s sense of self‑esteem, offering substantial commercial potential. In the skincare market, consumers not only value a product’s functionality and practicality but also pay close attention to its visual appeal and packaging quality. With an overwhelming array of domestic and international brands available, packaging has become a decisive factor in helping products stand out amid fierce competition—especially when features are comparable. Consequently, packaging is no longer merely a technical exercise; it has transformed into a complex cultural process, embodying a brand’s philosophy and telling its cultural story. 1. Psychological Characteristics of Female Consumers In the skincare market, women constitute the primary consumer base. Driven by aspirations to maintain beauty and youthfulness, they are willing to invest heavily in skincare products. Manufacturers respond to these psychological needs by allocating significant resources to product development and marketing, stimulating purchasing power while continuously studying shifts in female consumer behavior. For instance, women exhibit a pronounced desire for beauty and often gravitate toward products that are visually appealing, stylishly designed, and uniquely shaped. Moreover, women tend to possess strong emotional memory, making aesthetically valuable products more likely to spark their buying interest. As women’s consumption philosophies evolve, they increasingly consider not only the functional benefits of a product but also the status symbols it conveys, seeking to express their values and personal taste through their purchases. In skincare packaging design, incorporating human‑centric elements that highlight fashionability and innovation can effectively attract female consumers. By contrast, male consumers play a less prominent role in the skincare market, tending to prioritize practicality over elaborate packaging. 2. Consumer Self‑Needs Consumers make purchasing decisions based on their own needs. These needs evolve over time and with age, progressing from material concerns to spiritual ones. Accordingly, contemporary packaging design goes beyond mere product protection—it must convey deeper meaning and functionality. Every aspect of packaging design—conceptualization, box shape innovation, color palette selection, graphic choices, typography, and material experimentation—should be carefully considered to foster a meaningful connection between consumers and products, evoking emotional resonance. Younger consumers place greater emphasis on trendy, youthful aesthetics, often favoring fashionable motifs and vibrant colors. More mature consumers, on the other hand, prioritize practicality and sophistication, opting for designs that highlight utility while maintaining a simple, elegant style. Only by understanding consumers’ individual needs and different psychological profiles can brands successfully position their products within the marketplace. Visual consumption has become a pivotal component of modern consumer behavior. Many international designers adopt minimalist approaches, even employing monochromatic palettes to reduce ink usage, avoiding excessive ornamentation and emphasizing eco‑friendliness and health—reflecting a philosophy that prioritizes nature. For example, Fresh, known as the “high society of the plant world,” boasts natural ingredients and exceptional efficacy, earning widespread acclaim among consumers. Its skincare packaging typically features white ceramic bottles paired with pink outer boxes. Though seemingly plain, this understated yet meticulously crafted design—featuring the weighty presence of ceramic, subtle embossed textures on the box, and vintage‑inspired lettering—exudes both modesty and luxury. Many customers report being drawn to Fresh products precisely because of its distinctive packaging, only discovering its remarkable effects after use—a classic case of how visual appeal drives purchasing decisions.
